Yesterday was a great day! My five-year old daughter and four-year old son both learned to ride their bikes without training wheels – I was a proud papa! Their progress in one day astounded me!
But it wasn’t all roses. There were tears. Helmets were thrown to the ground. Coaxing. Encouraging. Quitting. Skinned knees. Trying again and again.
What helped my son and daughter the most through the whole process was giving them something to focus on.
While I was getting them started I would point out something in the distance, something easily recognizable for them to focus on. Mommy. The basketball hoop. The pink slide. Then I’d tell to ride to in that direction, pedal faster, and as long as they were focused, they would stay upright. When they would look to the side or to see if I was still holding them, they would lose their balance and that attempt would be over. Gradually, their balance got better, they learned to keep their focus in front of them, and they were off to the races.
Success is just like this! So long as we are focused on our goals and visions, we will head in the right direction. We will stay “upright” and not be swayed by the obstacles and hurdles that we encounter. There are distractions all around us. When we allow these distractions to turn our heads and change our focus, we begin to drift in the wrong direction. Before too long, we are headed way off course. A little longer and we won’t even see our goals any more.
It is of utmost importance to stay focused on your goals. At times you may move faster, other times slower, towards your dreams. But keep your focus on them. Laser-focus. Catch yourself when you notice you are drifting in the wrong direction. Re-focus and get moving again.
